This course is taught by Ellen Lupton for graphic design MFA students at MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art). Offered in Spring 2009, this graduate-level writing course challenges GD MFA students to consciously study writing as a craft. We will engage in a variety of short-form and long-form exercises to gain control of voice, style, structure, and narrative as well as appropriate uses of research and documentation. What we will not be doing is writing for “school.” We will produce all work with publication in mind, whether for your own blog, an edited forum, or a printed book or magazine. Writing “term papers” is a pointless endeavor that you should have mastered as an undergrad. This course embraces writing as a life skill that will serve you in your professional, intellectual, and public life. Manifestos on AIGA Voice
